Why process mapping

Process mapping was developed in the USA as early as the 1920’s and has been honed and refined by large organisations and business guru’s ever since.

It is now the widely accepted default method for understanding what your organisation actually does.

Process mapping enables business managers to easily identify and assess the various business processes that make up their organisation and to develop a road map for continued improvement.

A business process is a structured, measured set of activities designed to produce a specified output for a particular customer or market.

An easy example to follow is making breakfast:-

Notice how the above process map has four layers drilling down deeper into the process.

Process maps can also have swim lanes. These lanes are the various departments that exist in your company. You will be able to clearly see how the business process interacts with each department. It will also identify how much work each department has to do to complete the business process. This is one of the most popular ways to describe complicated processes with multiple participants.
